UPSC Photo — Frequently Asked Questions

UPSC requires a photograph of 300 × 400 pixels in JPEG format. The file size must be between 1 KB and 300 KB. The aspect ratio is 3:4 (portrait). Use the UPSC Photo preset above which is pre-configured with these exact values.
UPSC requires the signature to be 300 × 80 pixels, JPEG format, between 1 KB and 300 KB. Sign in black or blue ink on plain white paper, scan or photograph it clearly, then select the UPSC Signature preset above to resize it to the exact dimensions.
Common causes: (1) file is below 1 KB — too aggressively compressed, raise quality to 85%+, (2) dimensions are not exactly 350×350 px, (3) format is PNG instead of JPEG, (4) background is not white. This tool handles all of these — ensure you select the UPSC Photo preset before processing.
Use 85–92% quality. At 350×350 px, this produces a file between 30–150 KB — well within the 1–300 KB range. Avoid going below 70% as the file may drop under 10 KB and be rejected as too small.
The photo specifications are the same (350×350 px, max 300 KB) for both stages. However, UPSC requires a recent photograph (typically within 6 months). If Prelims and Mains are more than 6 months apart, use a fresh photo for Mains to avoid issues during document verification.
Yes — the UPSC portal requires the file to be at least 1 KB. This is unusual among exam portals. If you use very aggressive compression (quality below 40%), the file may become smaller than 1 KB and be rejected. The default quality of 88% will never hit this lower limit.
